Rationale Statement
Statement of Standard One- Subject Matter Knowledge
“Teachers shall understand the central concepts, tools of inquiry, structures of the discipline, especially as they relate to the New Jersey Core Curriculum Standards (CCCS), and design developmentally appropriate learning experiences making the subject matter accessible and meaningful to all students”. (NJPTSB, 2004, pg. 9)
Name of Artifact: 10-Minute Presentation
Date of Artifact: 4/11/13
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-02
Rationale Statement:
This project was my 10-minute presentation I gave to the class about how to make guacamole. This connects to standard one because I believe this a type of food I know about it, I enjoy it and I have learned how to make it in many different ways. Also, we are in a country where we have so much variety of cultures around us that we need to be exposed to other people’s culture. This presentation required me to explain the basic and important steps necessary to obtain the best type of guacamole. I have friends from different parts of Mexico and they always have different ways to make it, and I also had the opportunity to try it at different restaurants all over the country. I feel this type of dip has become one of the most popular dips around United States, even though its roots are from a different country. I believe showing the benefit of learning the skills of a lesson helped my students to have a great experience and think about them doing this easy and fun recipe.
While planning my lesson I struggle on how to provide my students a rich experience that truly had a meaning for them. I though that having me showing them a recipe that does not belong to my culture will help them understand that we are part of a great multicultural country where we are exposed to so much variety as if we were to travel the world! I also liked the idea of giving some samples to the students so this way they all can try the flavor of the guacamole and not just believe what I was saying, it will help me to make the lesson a rich experience for all of them. I decided also to let then try the recipe in class, this way at home they could have a point of reference to make their guacamole better.
I do recognize that not all of my lesson plans will be as particular or entertained as I planned this class. However, I do believe that they all need to be rich and need to have the main basic knowledge skills for our students. We as future educators need to make sure we provide our students with proper directions and instructions in order to help them accomplish their understanding on every subject matter.
I hope in a near future I will be able to accomplish that, and use my experience and knowledge learned throughout this lesson to encourage my students to think outside of the box, inside of the box, around the box and even have many boxes around because our life is full of variety and experiences and all of them should come from all over the place.
