THE ICE BREAKER

BALLOON TAG
Class Introduction exercise: 10th, 11th, and 12th grade
It can be adapted to students of all age and diverse learning abilities.
How to play:
- All students will write a word that describes them the most and insert it inside a balloon. It can be and adjective, a special quality or just a word they feel identified.
- Students will tie strings to the balloons and then tie one balloon to each person’s ankle.
- The object of the game is to pop everyone else’s balloons while making sure that yours does not get popped.
- Once your balloon is popped, you need to find the piece of paper inside the balloon.
- Once all of the papers are found, everyone will sit and will hear one of the students at the time introduce themselves.
- While one of the students is telling his or her personal interest and experiences, the other students will try to match the word in the paper with the information their classmates are providing.
Materials:
- Strings, balloons, paper, scissor, pens, markers, energy, good listening skills and desires to have fun.
RATIONALE STATEMENT #3 - Diverse Learners

Statement of Standard three- Diverse Learners
“Teachers shall “Teachers shall understand the practice of culturally responsive teaching” (NJPTSB, 2004, pg. 11)
Name of Artifact: Ice Breaker
Date of Artifact: February 28th
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-02
Rationale Statement:
The “Ice Breaker” activity is a known way to introduce a class for the first time they met. It helps students to talk to each other, get to know their classmates, and have fun at the same time. For this assignment I had to prepare a exciting activity that would provide my students this opportunity and it also had to be based on the NJCCCS standards and help them along standard three. This standard recognizes the influences culture and background of the class and recognizes the negative impact of bias, prejudice, and discrimination on students and society.
While I was working on the icebreaker activity, I realized some of the problems I as a teacher, could encounter in the future. For example, I thought it would be nice to have the students pop the balloons; but at the same time there will be students who could be hurt while doing this game and others who will think that it is too rough to play it! It is really difficult to try to come out with a game that can please everyone in a group. Although, I learned that this first activity can set the rules for the future of your class; can be the opening of a new class where you can learn so much about your students that it is important to remember the first impression of your class because there will be only one opportunity for it. This activity in the future will help me as an educator to understand the importance of having memorable learning moment with plenty of fun.
