Rationale Statement
Statement of Standard Five - Assessment
“Teachers shall understand and use multiple assessment strategies and interpret results to evaluate and promote student learning and to modify instruction in order to foster the continuous development of students”. (NJPTSB, 2004, pg. 13)
Name of Artifact: Assessment and Assessment with Modifications
Date of Artifact: 4/18/12
Course: Education Field Experience EDUC 230-02
Rationale Statement:
My artifact is made out of two different parts. An assessment designed for my general English class. Then I took this assessment and I helped the students that needed a modification by adding extra hints on the assessment that can guide the students to finish the assessment like the rest of the class. This assessment was based in my lesson plan # 2 where students had to listen to the poem The Raven written by Edgar Allan. This assessment helped the students to understand the poem and provide a critical analysis of it. It also helped me to understand my student’s knowledge of the poem. It also facilitated the students the opportunity to identify areas on a poem that they will need to use as a reference on future assignments they will need at a higher level.
The assignment has a connection to standard five because I had to use strategic ways for my students to understand the lesson and modify the assessment in order to help those who have a need for it. Most importantly, is that those students who have a disability also will have the opportunity to continue their education without feeling “out of place” on a lesson just because we as educator did not provide the tools necessary for them.
The biggest challenge for me doing this assignment came when I needed to provide any modification. This is because even though I am aware that students need a modification I feel I don’t have to bring a student down to help them understand a subject matter. I believe we need to help the student to be at the same level of their classmates with the necessary tools for their especial needs. Therefore, I decided to maintain the same assessment for both students, but I provided an extra help to guide those who had a difficulty understanding the poem they listened during the class.
I think I will be able to use this learning experience throughout my career. There will always be a student who learns in a different way than others, there will be a special need for someone, and there should always be a teacher ready and prepared to provide that and more.
